Arizona filed a consumer fraud lawsuit against Google on Wednesday. The state alleges the tech giant used “deceptive” and “unfair” practices to gather Android users’ location data.
In a tweet, Attorney General Mark Brnovich accused the company of collecting “detailed information about its users, including their physical locations, to target users for advertising.” He added that it’s often “done without the users’ consent or knowledge.”
These tactics reportedly include keeping location tracking running in the background of some apps and features–even after the user disabled app-specific location tracking. The suit says only after a user dug further into their settings and turned off system-level tracking Google stopped collecting the data.
Google later responded via email, writing “the Attorney General “appear[s] to have mischaracterized our services.”
The company said it has “always built privacy features into its products and provided robust controls for location data.”
The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages. It comes as tech companies have been facing more global scrutiny over their policies and data monitoring practices.
In February, New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas also sued Google. He said its educational software collects personal information from young students, without their parents’ consent.

Sky News host Paul Murray says the weekend protests prove “we’re not all in it together” because they directly contravene what everybody else in Australia has been allowed to do during the pandemic.
“Apparently wokeness is the ultimate way you can fight the coronavirus spread,” he said.
On Saturday, tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Australia’s cities to take part in anti racism demonstrations, spurred on by the death of unarmed black man George Floyd in the United States.
Mr Murray said in a free country, people can protest, but in reality due to the coronavirus crisis “tonight we are not a free country”.
“The same police who were willing to fine people if there were too many people in a funeral, sat back and didn’t issue one fine as tens of thousands took to the streets right around the country”.
Many Australians have expressed their anger towards the protests which didn’t have anything to do with the protesters democratic right to protest nor about what they were protesting, according to Mr Murray.
“It’s about why is their right to protest one that able to move through but your right to say goodbye to your mother, or your father, or your kid; well that had to wait”.
Mr Murray pointed to all the rights stripped from Australians during the pandemic including the right to march for current and fallen soldiers on ANZAC day, and the right to mourn loved ones, and how the protests were seemingly exempt from the same treatment.
