Arizona Files Fraud Lawsuit Against Google

Arizona filed a consumer fraud lawsuit against Google on Wednesday. The state alleges the tech giant used “deceptive” and “unfair” practices to gather Android users’ location data.
In a tweet, Attorney General Mark Brnovich accused the company of collecting “detailed information about its users, including their physical locations, to target users for advertising.” He added that it’s often “done without the users’ consent or knowledge.”
These tactics reportedly include keeping location tracking running in the background of some apps and features–even after the user disabled app-specific location tracking. The suit says only after a user dug further into their settings and turned off system-level tracking Google stopped collecting the data.
Google later responded via email, writing “the Attorney General “appear[s] to have mischaracterized our services.”
The company said it has “always built privacy features into its products and provided robust controls for location data.”
The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages. It comes as tech companies have been facing more global scrutiny over their policies and data monitoring practices.
In February, New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas also sued Google. He said its educational software collects personal information from young students, without their parents’ consent.

The details are out of Treasury now, and it looks like it isn’t going to work for a large number of small business owners after all.
Remember the deal the president signed to save America’s small businesses from ruin during the government’s coronavirus shutdown? The one hammered out by the Senate and Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin over weeks of tense negotiation while Americans worriedly watched, hoping good news might come before a depression does? The details are out of Treasury now, and it looks like it isn’t going to work for a large number of small business owners after all.
It isn’t going to work because the Senate’s formula allows far too little money to make up for a lost month and get through the following two or more while meeting the Senate’s demands. The Senate made these demands to protect workers, but did not provide the money a lot of businesses will need to protect workers and themselves. It’s just common sense, Washington will say, to protect workers and the taxpayer in these hard times
